RESEARCH INTERESTS
- Dr. James J. Huntzicker's research is concerned with the
physical and analytical chemistry of atmospheric pollutants. His
group has developed a real-time instrument for the measurement of
sulfur-containing aerosols in both field and laboratory
applications. This capability has permitted the acquisition of
ambient aerosol chemistry data suitable for testing aerosol
formation models. Real-time sulfate data from St. Louis, Los
Angeles, and the Ohio River Valley are being studied with respect
to the formation processes of sulfate aerosol, the physical
chemistry of these aerosols, and the role of urban, mesoscale, and
regional meteorology in the accumulation of sulfate particles in
the atmosphere. Dr. Huntzicker's group is also involved in the
measurement of organic, elemental, and carbonate carbon particles
collected on filters. These studies have generated a data base on
carbonaceous aerosols at urban and rural sites throughout the
United States. These data are being used to investigate the
relative importance of primary and secondary carbonaceous aerosols
in light scattering, and the relationship of carbonaceous aerosols
to meteorology. Current research also involves the use of a
real-time in situ instrument for the analysis of organic and
elemental carbon in aerosols to investigate the importance of
secondary processes in the formation of organic aerosols.
PUBLICATIONS
- Dr. Huntzicker has 33 publications in refereed journals.
